CropLife Canada welcomes Halifax Statement and focus on growth and competitiveness

CropLife Canada welcomes the release of the Halifax Statement by Canada's federal, provincial and territorial ministers of agriculture and is encouraged by its clear focus on economic growth and competitiveness, productivity, trade and resilience as the foundation for the next National Policy Framework.

Canada has the potential to become a global agriculture and food superpower, but achieving that status will require focused policies that enable investment, accelerate innovation and improve the sector's ability to compete in an increasingly complex global environment. This includes ensuring that the regulatory system for seed innovations and crop protection tools is predictable, efficient and risk-based, maintaining Canada’s high standards for health and safety while making it a leader in attracting investment in the latest innovations farmers need to succeed.

As governments begin negotiations on the next policy framework, CropLife Canada encourages a whole-of-government approach that recognizes agriculture's role as a major driver of economic growth and food security. Success will require coordinated growth-focused action across agriculture, innovation, trade, health, environment and economic development portfolios.
