CropLife Canada supports Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement

CropLife Canada is pleased that the negotiations on the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) have been successfully concluded, and believes that this historic trade agreement will have a very positive impact on the future growth and success of Canada’s plant sciences sector.

“Canadian agriculture depends on access to global markets,” said Dennis Prouse, Vice President, Government Affairs of CropLife Canada.  “Being part of a new trade agreement representing 40 percent of the world’s economy and 800 million consumers is a tremendous growth opportunity for our farmers. We strongly support any and all efforts to expand the ability of our farmers to deliver high quality Canadian products to the world.”

CropLife Canada is particularly pleased that science-based regulation, the backbone of Canada’s regulatory system and the key to rules-based trade, has been specifically included in the TPP.  “Transparency and science-based decision making is absolutely vital for consumer safety, investment and predictable market access,” explained Prouse. “Canadians have relied on the strength of our own science-based regulatory system for many years, and having these provisions in the TPP helps safeguard Canadian farmers against arbitrary, non-tariff trade barriers.”

CropLife Canada is the trade association representing the manufacturers, developers and distributors of plant science technologies, including pest control products and plant biotechnology, for use in agriculture, urban and public health settings.
