CropLife Canada applauds the passage of Bill C‑30
CropLife Canada welcomes the Government of Canada’s passage of Bill C‑30 and its decision to modernize the mandate of the Pesticide Regulatory Directorate (PRD) to explicitly include consideration of food security and economic growth.
For many years, Canada’s agriculture sector has called for a regulatory system that not only maintains its strong commitment to protecting human health and the environment, but also recognizes the critical role that crop protection tools and innovation play in supporting a resilient, sustainable, productive, and globally competitive food system. By incorporating food security and economic considerations into the PRD’s mandate the government has reinforced that these priorities are not in conflict with safety—they are complementary.
A modern, risk‑based regulatory framework can both uphold world‑leading safety standards and enable timely access to innovation that helps farmers be more productive, mitigate and adapt to climate and pest pressures, and remain competitive in global markets. If properly implemented, the updated mandate will position Canada as an attractive investment destination for agricultural innovation and help give Canadian farmers timely access to the tools they need to succeed on the farm.
When Canada’s agriculture industry succeeds, the country benefits. A productive and resilient agriculture industry underpins food security and affordability, and supports better health outcomes for Canadians. It also drives economic growth with widespread benefits across the Canadian economy.
CropLife Canada urges the government to move quickly towards the implementation of the updated mandate. We are committed to being a constructive partner in this process to help ensure this change delivers meaningful results for farmers and all Canadians.
