CropLife Canada applauds Government of Canada for joining international coalition for sustainable growth
CropLife Canada applauds the Government of Canada for joining the Coalition for Sustainable Productivity Growth for Food Security and Resource Conversation (SPG Coalition). The Coalition is focused on leveraging science and innovation to achieve specific outcomes related to sustainability rather than prioritizing any individual production methods. Canadian agriculture has long embraced this approach to make it among the most sustainable producers of food in the world and we have an important role to play advocating for the benefits of modern agriculture internationally.
Joining the SPG Coalition is a clear signal from Canada that it is ready to join with like-minded countries around the world, embracing science-based regulation to help create more sustainable food systems. The Coalition, which was launched by the U.S. as part of the 2021 United Nations Food Systems Summit, aims to “accelerate the transition to more sustainable food systems through agricultural productivity growth that optimizes agricultural sustainability across social, economic, and environmental dimensions.”
The plant science industry is committed to continuing to develop solutions to help drive sustainable intensification, allowing farmers to do more with less – optimizing agricultural production on existing land while leaving important natural habitats untouched to promote biodiversity. Pesticides and plant breeding innovations will also be critical as we look to build more resilient food systems in the face of climate change while continuing to reduce the overall impact of agriculture on the environment and improve both domestic and international food security.
The SPG Coalition supports a vision for agriculture that acknowledges the complexity of agricultural production and that rather than adopting a one-size-fits all approach to sustainable food systems, we must embrace science and innovation to deliver solutions that are adapted to the individual nature of each region’s distinct growing conditions.
Canada joins other key agricultural countries like the U.S., Australia, Brazil and others in the Coalition.
